My brother and I were running through the woods on a bright but cool, fall day. We heard a startling noise come from behind an old, large tree.
“Come on. Let’s see what that was,” He told me.
I shook my head. Whatever was behind that tree that made such a sound, I was sure I wanted nothing to do with it. I knew it meant trouble. My brother however went to take a look by himself.
“That is a bad idea.” I said.
It was then when I felt, the world had fallen silent. Not even a crinkle of leaves but the cool wind blowing, chilling my spine. I lurched behind the tree to see what had happened to my brother, but I quickly noticed I was alone. At least, I thought I was.
I heard the noise again, quieter this time. I took a few steps and the noise got louder. It soon got to a point where I felt the noise had taken over my body. As I stepped back, it quieted down. I felt movement on the ground. I looked down and stopped dead in my tracks. My mind, overwhelmed, tried to take in the image that lay before me. Hundreds of slimy, yellow worms slithered in a gaping hole. I shrieked. They quickly slithered out of the hole, except for one. I turned back but was surrounded by the worms. I looked more carefully at them. They seemed to be spelling a word. FOLLOW, I read. They quickly slithered into a new formation. It read: IF YOU WANT TO FIND YOUR BROTHER. I strongly did not want to follow the worm, but I knew I would have to if I ever wanted to see my brother again.
I stepped into the hole following the worm. I tried to see deeper into the hole but slipped and hit my head. I opened my eyes minutes later to find myself in a worm filled chamber. I looked up to see my brother on the other side of the chamber. His body was swarmed with worms.
“Help,” He yelled to me.
I through the few worms that were on me, off, and I made my way over to my brother.
I struggled to help him escape the worms, but together we managed to get him out. We ran to the nearest exit. It was a small door in the back of the chamber. I grasped the worm covered handle and pushed the door open. We found ourselves back in the woods, close to where we had been before entering the hole. I turned to the door, but it was gone. There was nothing but a large rock jutting out of a small hill.
My brother and I slowly walked home without saying a word to each other. I tried to forget about what just happened but no matter how hard I tried, it was always in the back of my mind, making me wonder…
